  Corydon – Richard Lee Felkner of Corydon, Iowa, former resident of this county, passed away at 3:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 13, at the Wayne County Hospital at the age of 28 years 10 months and 4 days. Death was attributed to a heart attack.

  Born in Appanoose County, he was the son of Gail and Mabel Barton Felkner. He was married to Ruth Anne Houser in Jerome, Iowa, June 28, 1959.

  Richard was the Laboratory Technician at the Wayne County Hospital, a member of the Methodist Church and president of the Corydon Junior Chamber of Commerce.

  Besides his widow, he is survived by three small children, Robin, Kelley and Randy, all at home; his father, Gail Felkner, member of the Appanoose County Board of Supervisors; a sister, Mrs. O. W. Cary, of Centerville; two brothers, Robert Felkner of East Moline, Ill., and Gail Felkner, Jr., of Silver Springs, Maryland.

  He was preceded in death by his mother, Mable Felkner, March 19, 1964.

Howard E. Hart, 1890-1947

  Howard E. Hart, son of Henry and Margaret Hart, was born May 8, 1890 and departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. R. Hefner at Jerome on Nov. 3, 1947.

  He was united in marriage January 10, 1911 to Cleo Green and to this union one daughter and two sons were born: Harriet Hefner of Jerome, Iowa, Loran of Gary, Indiana, and Harold of Chicago, Ill.

  He was born in Wayne County, Iowa, and grew to man-hood in and around Promise City, then later moved to Seymour, and then to Jerome where he lived until the death of his wife four years ago this coming December.

  He leaves to mourn his passing his three children, two grandchildren: Colleen and Norman Hefner; and six sisters and four brothers, who are: Elsie Guthrie of Russell, Iowa; Stella Chadwick of Saskatchewan, Canada; George Hart of Centerville; Etta Curtis of Corydon, Iowa; Marie Cheathem of Lynwood, Cal.; Colas Hellyer of Seymour, Iowa; Cree Hart of Des Moines, Iowa; Clyde Hart of Centerville, Iowa; and Russell Hart of Davenport, Iowa; besides a host of relatives and friends. He was also preceded in death by his father, mother and one brother.

  From the Ruby Undertaking Parlor at Seymour his body was taken to the Jerome Methodist Church, where services were held Wed., Nov. 5 at 2 P.M., with its pastor, the Rev. M. R. Gonzalez, officiating.  Mrs. Hazel Felkner of Jerome played comforting hymns for about 15 minutes before and after the funeral cortege arrived at the Church.  Mrs. Norma McMurray of Promise City, a Niece of the deceased, say “In The Garden,” accompanied by Mrs. Felkner.  He was laid to rest by the side of his wife in the Jerome Cemetery.

  Jerome and surrounding community join his bereaved children in the passing of a loving father, a devoted husband and a kind friend.  He was well liked and respected, and enjoyed helping his fellowmen.

  Cleo May Green, daughter of Peter S. and Sarah Dorcas Green, and wife of Howard E. Hart, was born near Promise City, Iowa, in Wayne county, May 18, 1893, and passed away after an illness of about two years, December 15, 1943, at the St. Joseph hospital in Centerville, Iowa.  Her age at the time of death was 50 years, six months and 27 days.

  She spent the early part of her life in Wayne county.  In January, 1910, she was married to Howard Hart and three children were born to this happy and devoted couple: Mrs. Harriette Hefner of Jerome, Loren and Harold of the U.S. Navy.

  On January 17, 1915, she gave her heart to Christ by uniting with the Methodist church at Promise City and although she had resided in Jerome for the past 12 years she still retained her membership in the former church.

  Her parents and two sisters preceded her in death.  Left to mourn her passing are three brothers: Ferren of Bethlehem, Iowa; Everett of Sewal, Iowa, and a two brother, Clyde, of Rock Island, Ill.  Also two grandchildren, Colleen and Norman Hefner of Jerome, besides other relatives and a large circle of friends.

  Mrs. Hart will always be remembered as a very devoted wife and a very dependable and understanding friend and helpful neighbor. She was gifted with the grace to suffer with patience and without complaint and a genial smile generally greeted those who came to see her even when her condition was most critical. Today Jerome deeply mourns the loss of one of her most beloved citizens and the church one of her most courageous members, who leaves behind a beautiful and noble example of patience and resignation to the will of God.

  Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. M. R. Gonzales, Friday at 2:00 p.m., at the Jerome Methodist church with Mrs. Dave Workman at the piano.  Mrs. Lita Bollman, Mrs. Marcella Workman and Mrs. Genevieve Minks sang three comforting hymns: “Ivory Palaces,” “No Night There” and “Going Down the Valley.” She was laid to rest in the Jerome cemetery.

  Funeral services for Jacob V. Garretson, who died at the home of his brother, Ira Garretson, near Plano, on March 31, were held at the Cross Roads church on Sunday, April 2.  Burial was made in the Jerome cemetery.

  Mr. Garretson was the son of John C. and Mary E. Garretson.  He was born on March 16, 1863.  Ruremia, from which he was ill for three weeks, was given as the cause of death.

  Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brinkley were visiting in Numa Sunday and attended the funeral of their brother-in-law Jake Garretson, who passed away Friday.  Mr. Garretson was a well known Franklin resident, having lived here for many years.  Only recently going to his brother’s in Seymour.  Mrs. Garretson and Mrs. Brinkley are sisters.

  Funeral services for Jacob Vale Garretson, 70, who lived east of Seymour were held at the Little Flock Baptist church, Sunday, April 2, at one o’clock, and were conducted by the Rev. Glade Yost.  Burial was made in the cemetery at Jerome.

OBITUARY

  Jacob Vale Garretson, son of John C. and Mary Ditmer Garretson, was born in Harrisbury twp., VanBuren county, Iowa, on March 16, 1863, and departed this life on March 31, 1933, at the age of 70 years and 15 days.  Mr. Garretson came to Appanoose county with his parents in 1869, and from that time his life has been spent in this county.  He was an honorable and upright citizen, respected by all who knew him, and in his passing he leaves a host of loving friends to mourn their loss.  He was the eldest of nine children, all but one of whom survive, one sister, Hannah Caroline, have preceded him in death thirty-nine years ago. He was united in marriage to Sarah A. Brinkley on Oct. 4, 1893, who survives him.  On May 18, 1893 under the pastorate of the Rev. Wm. Beard, he was converted and united with the Little Flock Baptist church which was then his home church, and on Oct. 25, 1895 he took his church letter to the Franklin Baptist church, near his home in Appanoose county, east of Seymour.

  Mr. Garretson’s health had gradually failed in the last few months, but he was a patient sufferer, cheerful and uncomplaining.  Throughout his suffering, he wanted to care for himself until he became bedfast.  He remained in complete control of all his faculties until last Friday morning when he lapsed into a coma, and passed away Friday evening March 31, at 8 o’clock.  His death occurred at the home of his brother, Ira Garretson, with whom he had made his home the past fall and winter months.

  In his passing Mr. Garretson leaves the following relatives to mourn his departure: Howard Garretson and family of Moravia, Iowa; Dan Garretson and family of Seymour, Iowa; Ira Garretson and family of Plano, Iowa; Rex Garretson of Seymour, Iowa; Mary Bonner and family of Woodward, Oklahoma; Lyda Connor and husband of Cereal, Okla.; Linda Anderson and family of Seymour, Ia.

  Funeral services were held in the Little Flock Baptist church, Sunday, April 2^nd, at one o’clock, conducted by the Rev. Glade Yost, and burial was made in the cemetery at Jerome.

Carl William Fenton, 1909-1981

  Carl William Fenton, a lifelong resident of the are, who had resided on Route 2, Seymour since November 1, 1980, died suddenly at his home Thursday, March 26, 1981.  He had suffered a heart attack in September.

  Born February 18, 1909, north of Plano, he was the son of Joe and Mary McAninch Fenton.  He married Nora Finton at Corydon in 1929, and she died October 22, 1967. On April 12, 1976, he married Bessie Cochran Fenton in Las Vegas, Nev., and she survives.

  Mr. Fenton was employed by Appanoose County many years, and farmed in the Brushy vicinity prior to that time. His parents, one grandson, two brothers, Emerl Fenton and Merl Fenton, and two sisters, Alta Farris and Bertha Hawk, preceded him in death.

  Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Burness Fenton of Biloxi, Miss.; Robert Fenton of Davenport; two daughters, Leona Foster, Eldridge, Ia.; and Fern Davolt, Bettendorf, Ia.; one stepson, Donald Fenton, Lineville, Ia.; three stepdaughters, Beulah DeVore, Seymour rural route, Mary Lou Levis, Sewal; and Betty Burns, Eldridge, Ia.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild, a number of step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, one sister, Icel Hart, Centerville; and one brother, Floyd Fenton, Centerville.

  Services were March 28 at Miller-Wehrle Funeral Home in Centerville, with John Lewis officiating.  Burial was in Jerome Cemetery.

  A pond on the Felkner farm in Johns township, west of the city about eight miles, was the scene of a drowning late yesterday afternoon, in which the son of Samuel Coulson met his death.  Young Coulson [Chester Allen Coulson], aged about 18, and a companion were in bathing. The pond at the deepest place does not contain over eight feet of water.  Coulson was wading out toward the center of the pool when he suddenly sank below the surface. He had made no outcry and his companion, who was not far away, thought he had made a dive.  He waited for his re-appearance and a the seconds passed without his coming to the surface, he became alarmed. His fright increased almost to a frenzy as the moments slipped by and then he hurried to the farm house and gave the alarm.  A raft was constructed and search for the body began.  It was some time before it was located and brought to the surface. Examination showed that every spark of life was extinct.  The remains were taken home and the funeral was held this afternoon at 3 o’clock, interment being in the Philadelphia church yard. Drowning was without doubt due to a cramp. After the disappearance under the waves the body never came to the surface.

  Mr. and Mrs. Coulson have a wide circle of friends who will be sorry to learn of their bereavement.

  Chester Allen Coulson was born on December 14, 1880, the son of Samuel and Vashti (Shaeffer) Coulson, and drowned on July 18, 1897 in a pond on the Felkner farm in Johns Township, Appanoose County, Iowa.  He was buried in Philadelphia Cemetery in Johns Township.

  Lorene A. (Boots) Walker, 84, of Centerville died Monday, Oct. 16, 1995, at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital.

  She was born March 12, 1911, in Jane, Mo., the daughter of Joseph and Ellen (Lamb) Davenport.

  She married Raymond Walker Feb. 9, 1932, in Kemmerer, Wyo. He survives.

  Also surviving are a son, Loren Walker and his wife, Sheila, of Centerville; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

  She was raised in Wyoming, living there until 1950 when she and her husband moved east of Udell and farmed.  They stayed on the farm until retirement in 1978. She attended the Fairview Brethren Church and was active in the Ladies Aid organization. She was a homemaker and a volunteer at the 18-80 Club.

  Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Lange Funeral Home in Centerville with the Rev. Charles Grove officiating.  Burial will be in the Jerome Cemetery. A family visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and friends may call all day Wednesday and Thursday morning.

  Memorials to the Fairview Church and the 18-80 Club have been established and may be left at the funeral home.

  John R. Garza, 60, of Midland, died on Friday, May 25, 2012, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Jerome, Iowa. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, at the funeral home.

  He was born June 28, 1951, in Ft. Stockton, Texas and married Kandace Deputy on December 27, 1980. He graduated from UTPB with a degree in Criminal Justice. John retired from Chevron Texaco after 23 years, and began a new career with XTO Energy. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved being with his family and friends, his job, and his cats. John also loved to be outdoors.

  John is survived by his wife, Kandace Garza; his daughter, Leah Hart Garza, both of Midland; his son, Chad Eric Deputy of Des Moines, Iowa; one grandson, Walker Lane Deputy; one granddaughter, Gracelyn Hart Deputy, both of Des Moines, Iowa; his mother, Lucia Garcia of Ft. Stockton; four brothers; two sisters; 5 sisters-in-law, 5 brothers-in-law, numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends.

  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Yvonne Garza; his father, Marcus Garza; his mother-in-law, Carole Deputy; and his nephew, Marcus Garza III.

  Etta Jane Phillips, age 83, longtime resident of the Cincinnati Community, passed away suddenly at her home in Cincinnati, at 6 p.m., Friday evening [2 February 1969].

  Born in Kansas on Feb. 21, 1884, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Van Dorn Moore. She was married to William E. Phillips who preceded her in death Aug. 2, 1952. The family moved to Jerome from Kansas, then moved to Numa and spent their later years in Cincinnati.  They also lived in Wyoming.

  Surviving are five children, Oren Phillips, Centerville; Delmar Phillips, Laramie, Wyo.; James Phillips, Cincinnati; Woodrow Phillips, Laramie, Wyo., and Grace McQueen  of Rock Springs, Wyo.

  Other survivors include a sister, Gertrude Hudson of St. Joseph, Mo.; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

  She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, a daughter, a granddaughter, two brothers and four sisters.

  Funeral services were held Monday, at 1:30 p.m. from Johnson Funeral Home with burial in the Jerome cemetery. Rev. Kermit Gladfelder will officiate.

  Etta Jane Phillips, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Van Dorn Moore, was born in Kansas Feb. 21, 1884, and passed away at the home of her son James in Cincinnati, Iowa, on Feb. 2, 1968, being at the time of her death 83 years, 11 months and 12 days old.

  On Oct. 17, 1904, she was married to William E. Phillips. To this union seven children were born.

  Her husband, two small children, one granddaughter, four sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.

  The five surviving children are: Oren of Centerville, Delmar and Woodrow, both of Laramie, Wyo., James of Cincinnati, Iowa and Grace of Rock Springs, Wyo.

  One sister, Mrs. Gertrude Hudson of St. Joseph, Mo., also survives.

  She was a member of the Methodist Church in Jerome, Iowa, in early life. She led a quiet home life and will be sadly missed by all her loved ones.

  Following services at the Johnson Funeral Home she was laid to rest beside her husband in the Jerome cemetery. Rev. Gladfelder conducted the services.

William Phillips, 1881-1952

  William Phillips, 71, retired resident of Cincinnati, Ia., shot himself with a .22 caliber rifle Friday night at 11:30 and died in the St. Joseph’s hospital in Centerville at 12:20 A.M., Saturday.

  According to Dr. C.H. Mitchell, of Cincinnati, who attended him, Phillips shot himself with the muzzle of the rifle pressed against his head just above his right ear.

  Further report is that Mrs. Phillips had tried to prevent her husband from taking his life but was unsuccessful.

  Mr. Phillips was well known and his tragic death has come as a shock and sorror to a wide circle of friends and relatives.

  Mr. Phillips leaves his widow, Etta Jane, and five children, Oren of Exline, Delmar, of Superior, Wyo.; James of Bettendorf; Woodrow, of Laramie, Wyo., and Mrs. Grace McQueen, of Rock Springs, Wyo.

  There are 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren, as well as the following brothers and sisters: Charles Phillips of Washington; Mrs. Pearl Andrews of Centerville; John Phillips of Des Moines; Ernest Phillips of Centerville; Mrs. May Corder and Mrs. Eva Holmes of Ottumwa, and Mrs. Kate Morrow of Centerville.

  Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced later. The boy now lies in state at the Johnson Funeral home.
