Edith E. (Duncan) Fry, 1886-1973

  JEROME – Mrs. O. L. (Edith) Fry died at Cedar Rapids Friday night.   The funeral was Tuesday at the Johnson home in Centerville with interment in the Jerome Cemetery.  Mrs. Fry had been staying with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Shanahan, a few months during her declining health.  She was 87.
  Mrs. Fry was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver L. Fry; a daughter Delilah; three sisters and one brother.  Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Shanahan, seven grandchildren and one sister, Mary Ellen Brown of Centerville.

  Wilsonia Shanahan, 68, formerly of Centerville, died Saturday, June 27, 1992, at Mercy Medical Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
  She was born May 25, 1924, in Jerome, the daughter of O. L. and Edith Fry.
  She was united in marriage to Clifford Shanahan in August of 1941 in Unionville, Mo. He preceded her in death.
  She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.
  She is survived by three sons, Clifford Marvin of Jerome, Bradley of Cedar Rapids and Roger of Dallas, Texas; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
  Wilsonia was employed at McKee Button Factory in Centerville and Mercy Hospital and K-Mart in Cedar Rapids. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
  Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, 1992, at the Lange Funeral Home with the Rev. Duane McCracken officiating.
  Burial will be in the Jerome Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Monday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 at the Lange Funeral Home.
  A memorial has been established and may be left at the funeral home.

David Clifford Shanahan, 1921-1985

  David Clifford Shanahan, 63, of 619 8th Avenue S.W., Cedar Rapids, died Friday, July 19, 1985, at his home, following a short illness.
  Born July 28, 1921, in Centerville, he was the son of David and Edna Peel Shanah.  On Aug. 29, 1942, he was married to Wilsonia Fry in Unionville, Mo.  For more than 15 years he worked as a molder for Iowa Steel and Iron Works, Cedar Rapids, and was a member of the Molders Union in Cedar Rapids.  He was a member of First Baptist Church, Centerville.
  Survivors include his wife, three sons, Marvin of Jerome; Roger of Plano, Texas; and Brad of Cedar Rapids; his mother, Edna Shanahan; two brothers, Don and Bernard, both of Centerville, and seven grandchildren.
  Visitation was scheduled at the Turner Chapel West in Cedar Rapids Sunday, Jujly 21. Visitation at the Johnson-Lange Funeral Home in Centerville is scheduled for this afternoon and evening.  Services will be held at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, with the Rev. Raleigh Gordon officiating.  Interment will be in Jerome Cemetery.

Clifford Marvin Shanahan, 1942-1996

  Clifford M[arvin] Shanahan, 54, of Jerome died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 1996, at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital.
  He was born June 28, 1942, near Jerome, the son of David and Wilsonia (Fry) Shanahan. He married Pat McMurray Feb 5, 1966, in Marion. She survives.
  Also surviving are his two sons, David Shanahan and his wife, Sherry, of Seymour and Johnny Shanahan of Promise City; two brothers, Roger Shanahan of Plano, Texas, and Brad Shanahan of Cedar Rapids; and three grandchildren.
  He was preceded in death by his parents.
  He received his education in Centerville community schools and graduated in 1960. He served in the Army from 1966 to 1968 and in the National Guard from 1976 to 1995. He owned and operated his own roofing company, Shanahan Roofing, in Jerome.
  Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Schmidt-Duley Funeral Home in Centerville with the Rev. Donnel Logston officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today, Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

William Francis Duncan, 1901-1952

  Rogers [Special] -- William Francis Duncan, member of the Rogers City Council, died at 1 o'clock this morning [22 December 1952] in the Rogers Memorial Hospital after an illness of about three months.  He was born in [Johns Township], Appanoose County, Iowa, [on 21 February 1901], son of Francis [Marion] and Delilah McCurn [McKern] Duncan, and came to Rogers in 1936 from Illinois. He had been general sales supervisor of Consolidated Product Company, Danville, IN, for the past 19 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a Shriner. 
  Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Irene [Dorothy Dugan] Duncan; a daughter, Patricia, of the home; a son, Howard Duncan of Liberal, Kan.; and four sisters: Mrs. B. O. Buck of Nuna [Numa], Iowa, and Mrs. O. L. Frye, Mrs. Joe Doinsetto [Ponsetto], and Mrs. William Brown, all of Jerome, Iowa.
  Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the Callison-Porter Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Alfred Gerdel, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Rogers Cemetery.

  Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Ervin visited friends in Cincinnati Sunday.
  Harold Hart visited his sister, Mrs. W. R. Hefner, the first of the week. He was enroute from Chicago, where he has been employed for several years, to Whittier, Calif., where he will move with his family. He will have employment there. 
  Mrs. I. E. Fry has received word that her sister, Mrs. Sylvia Hullett, of Omaha had been severely burned in an accident and was in critical condition.
  MYF will meet at the church Wednesday evening.
  Mr. and Mrs. Peter Sidles and Mrs. Janice Sidles of Seymour spent Sunday with the Howard Sidles family in Ames and with Pet and Jim, who attend school there.
  Howard Sidles will soon go to Oak Ridge, Tenn., for two weeks training in the Naval Reserve. He will be accompanied by his family, who will spend time with her parents in Raleigh, N.C.
  Billy Fry, who returned from service in Germany two weeks ago, was married Saturday, Nov. 15, at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. E. Fry.
  The bride was Miss Geneva Stevens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry [Elmer] Stevens of Centerville. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. M. R. Gonzalez in the presence of the immediate family, Mr. and Mrs. I. E. Fry and son, Jackie, of Bettendorf; the bride's mother, Mrs. Ada Stevens of Centerville; Mrs. M. R. Gonzales and Portia; Mrs. Anna Snodgrass; Mrs. Mae Manda and Miss Mary Scott.
  Best man was Jackie Fry and the bridesmaid was Miss Shirley Coatney of Centerville.
  Mrs. Fry served refreshments of sandwiches, ice cream and coffee with the wedding cake.
  The community gave a shower for them Monday night in the school auditorium with Mrs. Marshall Moore and Mrs. I. E. Fry as hostesses. They were assisted by Mrs. John Ponsetto.
  Harvest Home Sunday will be observed at the Methodist church Sunday, Nov. 23, in connection with layman's day. Mrs. Charley McGavran, lay leader, will be in charge.
  Guest speaker will be Roger Crews, field man for the Appanoose county extension program.
  There will be special music and other features in connection with the services at the regular preaching hour, 10 o'clock, followed by Sunday school.

James Elias Fox, 1919-1993

  James Elias Fox, son of Charles and Mary (Kelly) Fox, was born May 16, 1919, in Jerome, Ia., and died Monday, July 5, 1993, in a Kirksville, Mo., nursing home at the age of 74 years.
  He was married to Nellie Fry in January 1941, and to this marriage eight children were born.
  He was married to Vera Stone on April 1, 1972, in Kirksville, Mo.  She survives.
  Also surviving are five sons, Jim Fox, Bettendorf, Ia., Earnst Fox, Bettendorf, Ia., John Fox, Bettendorf, Ia., Ronald Fox, Bettendorf, Ia.,and Danny Fox, Bettendorf, Ia.; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Jaretta) Dixon, of Colorado, Elizabeth Fox, of Colorado, and Mrs. Preston (Carolyn) Schmidt, Bettendorf, Ia., three step-sons, William Stone, Coal Valley, Ill., Charles Stone, Moline,Ill., and Larry Stone, Moline, Ill.; four step-daughters, Joyce Stone, Stanberry, Mo., Pamela Gordy, Fairfield, Ia., Debra Stone, Fairfield Ia., and Goldie Phillips, Kirksville, Mo., a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother Abraham "Buster" Fox, Lohrville, Ia.; and two sisters, Jessie Warren, Garden Grove, Calif., and Marguerite Fomaro, Des Moines, Ia.
  He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Fox, on March 23, 1993; and six sisters, Alice Moore, Goldie McKinley, Stella Kirchner, Irene White, Evelyn Sebben, and Bonnie Mae Fox in infancy.
  Mr. Fox started working in coal mines at the age of thirteen.  During World War II he worked as a welder in defense plants.  He moved to Queen City in 1973 where he built a machine shop which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1989.
  Services were held Thursday, July 8, 1993, in Dooley Funeral Chapel, Queen City, with the Rev. Archie Cooper officiating.  Music was provided by Julia Mullick, organist, and Georgia Ann Robinson, soloist.  Special selections were "Beyond the Sunset" and "The Old Rugged Cross."
  Bearers were Jock Fox, Tom Fox, Leonard Fox, Jonny Poinsetio. Wayne Moore  and Wayne Creasey.
  Burial was in Jerome cemetery, west of Centerville, Ia.

Essie May Fry Loofbourrow, 1885-1975

  Mrs. Essie May Loofbourrow, 89, a lifelong resident of Appanoose County, who had resided at 619 West State Street, Centerville, the past 10 years, died in Wayne County Hospital in Corydon Thursday, March 6, 1975.  She had suffered ill health one year, and had been hospitalized three days.
  Born November 19, 1885, West of Centerville, she was the daughter of Isaac and Tabitha Brannon Fry. She was married to Robert Hileman in 1903, and he died January 16, 1912. On March 17, 1917, she was married to David Loofbourrow in Wayne County, and he preceded her in death June 3, 1942.
  Mrs. Loofbourrow, a longtime resident of Jerome, was a member of Jerome Methodist Church. Her parents, an infant sister Chloe, and two brothers, Vernie and Earl Fry, preceded her in death.
  Survivors include two sons, James Hileman and Merle Loofbourrow, both of Centerville Route 3, three grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Arthur (Jessie) Bear, Panarama, Calif.; and Mrs. Robert (Helen) Bear, Centerville.
  Services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Miller-Wehrle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Glen Lochhead officiating. Burial will be in Jerome Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 8 p.m.

Lois "Nevella" Bear Shepard, 1917-2009

  Lois "Nevella" Shepard, 92, of Centerville died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville. She was born the daughter of Robert and Helen (Fry) Bear on March 3, 1917 near Mystic. Lois attended the Plano Community Schools.
  On Feb. 3, 1935 she was united in marriage to Lowell Shepard. She was a homemaker and a member of the Drake Avenue Christian Church in Centerville where she was the church secretary for many years. She was also a part of the North Bend Ladies Aid, and Order of Eastern Star where she was a Past Worthy Matron.
  Nevella was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Lowell Shepard on June 17, 2002; brother, Robert Bear; and a grandson, Dustin Shepard on May 5, 2006.
  She is survived by; sons, Dean and his wife, Marilyn Shepard of Centerville and Wendell and his wife, Mary Louise Shepard of Springfield, Mo.; daughter Karen and her husband, LaVern Shondel of Centerville, sister: Deloris Bohm of Centerville; seven grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandson.
  Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville with the Rev. Carl Heien officiating. Burial will follow at the Concord Cemetery near Plano. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 28 from 3-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

D. N. Loofbourrow Called By Death - Ill Short Time
Well Known Farmer of the Jerome Vicinity
Succumbs After Three Weeks Illness
  David N. Loofbourrow, well known and long time resident passed away at his farm home near Jerome yesterday (Wednesday) June 3, shortly after 1 p.m.
  He had been in his usual state of health until about three weeks ago when he became suddenly ill, and on the advice of his physician, entered St. Joseph's hospital for treatment. When he failed to respond he was taken to his home where he became steadily worse until the time of his passing.
  Those left to mourn his passing are, the wife, a daughter Zelda, who is Mrs. J. W. Workman and lives nearby, and a son, Merle, at home. Also a brother, James, of Plano vicinity and two grandsons. Many neighbors, friends, and other relatives over the county join the immediate family in their sorrow.
  Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the Jerome M. E. church, of which Mr. Loofbourrow was a member. Rev. J. A. Wilson will conduct the services with interment in Jerome cemetery.

  David N. Loofbourrow was born 21 September 1871 in Harresburg, Van Buren County, Iowa, son of Wade Loofbourrow and Elizabeth Whitcomb, died 3 June 1942 at his home near Jerome in Appanoose County, Iowa, and was buried in the Jerome Cemetery.  
  He married, first, on 3 February 1892, in Appanoose County, Iowa, Hattie Fry who was born 10 January 1873 in Iowa, daughter of Richard H. Fry and Elizabeth Taylor, died 28 August 1915 in Appanoose County, Iowa, and was buried in the Jerome Cemetery. Child of this union: Zelda Loofbourrow was born on 29 March 1896, married James Wesley Workman, died 19 February 1986, and was buried in the Jerome Cemetery. 
  He married, second, on 27 March 1917 in Wayne County, Iowa, Essie May Fry Hileman who was born 19 November 1885, daughter of Isaac Fry and Tabitha Brannon, who had married in 1903 Robert Hileman who died 16 January 1912, died 6 March 1975 at Wayne County Hospital in Corydon, Wayne County, Iowa, and was buried in the Jerome Cemetery.  Child of this union: Merle Loofbourrow was born 6 August 1919, married Helen Link, died 23 June 1999, and was buried in the Jerome Cemetery.

  Merle Loofbourrow, 79, of Centerville died Wednesday, June 23, 1999, at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital.
  He was born Aug. 6, 1919, in Centerville, the son of David and Essie Mae (Fry) Loofbourrow.
  He married Helen Link Sept.; 27, 1942, in Centerville. She survives.
  Also surviving are three sons, Ron Loofbourrow of Dewey, Okla., Don Loofbourrow and his wife, Jan, of West Liberty and David Loofbourrow and his wife, Theresa, of Centerville; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law; and a sister-in-law.
  He was preceded in death by his parents and a half brother, James Hileman.
  He attended Jerome High School until the 10th grade and graduated from Centerville High School. He was assistant caretaker of Jerome Cemetery and farmed. His farm became a Century Farm in 1993 and he lived there until his death.
  Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Johnson-Lange Funeral Home with the Revs. Carl Heien and David Ratchford officiating. Burial will be in the Jerome Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today, Friday.
  A memorial has been established to the Jerome Cemetery and contributions may be left at the funeral home. 

James Hileman, 1905-1999

  James Thomas Hileman, 93, of Centerville died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital.
  He was born March 9, 1905, in Jerome, the son of Robert and Essie (Fry) Hileman.
  He married Fern Clinkenbeard June 30, 1924. She survives.
  Also surviving are a half-brother, Merle Loofbourrow of Centerville and brother-in-law, Kenneth Clinkenbeard of Rockford, Ill.
  Also preceding him in death were his parents.
  He received his education in Jerome schools. He hauled gravel and limestone in and around Appanoose County for 42 years. He was also a farmer.
  Funeral services were held Monday at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville with the Rev. Lloyd Johnston officiating. Burial was in Jerome Cemetery in Jerome. There was a visitation before the services.
  Memorials may be given to the Jerome Cemetery and contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Glendoris Bailey Buck, 1879-1962

  Glendoris Irene Buck, 82, of Numa, Iowa, passed away Sunday, June 24, at the Golden Age Nursing Home, where she had been a patient for three weeks.
  Mrs. Buck was born in Princeton, Mo., the daughter of Jackson and [Delila] Ann McKern Bailey, and was married to Charley Ewurs who preceded her in death. Later she was married to Benjamin Otto Buck, who also preceded her in 1951. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Anna Mae; one son, Clarence; and one brother.  She is survived by a son, Paul Ewurs, Royal Lake, Ill.; a daughter, Mrs. Georgia Compton, of Franklin Grove, Ill.; three sisters, Mrs. Edith Fry, Mrs. Hazel Ponsetto, Mrs. Mary Brown, all of Jerome, Iowa; ten grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
  Mrs. Buck had spent the past two winters with a granddaughter, Mrs. Bernice Butler, of 1808 South 16th.
  Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 26, at 2 p.m., from the Numa Christian Church with the Rev. Orval Walker officiating. Burial will be in the Jerome Cemetery. The body is at the Miller-Wehrle Funeral Home.
