Charles Lovell McGavran, 1883-1957

  Charles Lovell McGavran, son of J. L. McGavran and Hattie Branch, was born Dec. 6, 1883, at Minneapolis, Kans.; and passed away at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital in Centerville, Iowa, Nov. 21, 1957, at the age of 73 years, 11 months and 15 days.
  With the exception of his early childhood he lived his entire life in or near Seymour, Iowa.
  On Oct. 2, 1904, he was united in marriage to Bertha Etta Close who proceded him in death. To this union were born two sons, Kenneth of Des Moines and Keith of Ames, Iowa. 
  When a young man he was united with the Christian church of Seymour. During the past few years he had attended the Jerome Methodist church at Jerome, Iowa.
  On June 25, 1947 he was united in marriage to Ida Mincks, who with his sons, Kenneth and Keith; stepsons, Richard Mincks of Seymour and William Mincks of Cedar Falls, Iowa; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren survive his passing.
  He also leaves two brothers, Elvin and Earl of Seymour; six sisters, Mrs. Maude Lister of Plano, Iowa; Mrs. Nina Whitworth of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; Mrs. Chloe Vaverka of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mrs. Alice Agnew of Wichita, Kans.; Mrs. Ruth Edwards and Mrs. June Drefke of Alamo, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews and friends. A sister and a brother preceded him in death.
  The funeral services were held at the Jerome Methodist church Sunday, Nov. 24, 1957, at 2 p.m.  Burial was in the Southlawn Cemetery, Seymour.

Ida R. (Morrison) McGavran, 1903-1996

  Ida R. McGavran, daughter of B. A. and Lutitia (Stoner) Morrison, was born January 28, 1903 in Appanoose County, Iowa. She passed away April 7, 1996 at the Seymour Care Center at the age of 93 years, 2 months, 9 days.
  She lived in the Jerome area all of her life, where she farmed and was a life-time member of the Jerome Methodist Church.
  She married George Mincks in 1922 and they later divorced. She married Charles McGavran in 1947 and he preceded her in death. Also preceding here were her parents and a sister, Mary C. Jones.
  She is survived by two sons, Richard Mincks and wife, Genevieve of Seymour and William Mincks and wife, Donna of Cedar Falls; a newphew, Frank D. Jones of Naples, Florida; four grandchildren, Mary Catherine Couchman of Bella Vista, Arkansas; Steven Mincks of Chillicothe, Missouri; Jane Turner of Clive, Iowa, and Susan Pitcher of Las Vegas, Nevada; plus four great-grandchildren, Duane Couchman of Milo; Troy Couchman of Bella Vista, Ark.; and Andrew and Laura Turner of Clive, Iowa.
  Ida was active in her family life, the church and White Shrine of Jerusalem, in which she served as Worthy High Priestess.
  Funeral services were held Thursday, April 11, 1996 at 1:30 p.m. from the Randolph Funeral Home, Seymour with Rev. Leroy Perkins officiating. The hymns “In The Garden” and “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” were sung by Milton Albertson, accompanied by Mary Parker, pianist.
  Pallbearers were Troy Couchman, Gary Couchman, Duane Couchman, Brian Turner, Steven Mincks and Paul McElvain.  Honorary bearers were Kenneth Owen and John Ponsetto. Interment was in the Jerome Cemetery.
  A memorial was established to the Jerome Methodist Church.

McGavrans Return From Extensive Trip

  Mr. and Mrs. Elvin McGavran arrived home Monday morning after being away since Dec. 19. They spent the Christmas holidays in Denver, Colo., with their daughters, Betty Jeanne McGavran and Mrs. Dorothy Grant, and son, David.
  They then went to Westmorland, Calif., and visited Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Hall, also stopping in Los Angeles, Oakland and San Francisco before going to Seattle, Wash., where they visited another daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Londean, and Mrs. McGavran's sisters, Miss Adelaide Hughes and Mrs. Earl Farnsworth and her husband, and with the Wilbur, Burl and Robert McGavran families.
  They also called on Mrs. Dan Kingery in the hospital where she is slowly improving and can now walk some with crutches.
  On their return home they stopped in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, at the Charley McGavran home and at Chesterton, Ind., where they visited another sister of Mrs. McGavran's, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wilson. They also visited in Hammond, Ind., and Peoria, Ill.

McGavran Rites To Be Sunday
  Funeral services for Charles L. McGavran, 73, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Jerome Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Seymour Cemetery.
  Mr. McGavran, who lived on a farm one mile west and one mile north of Jerome, died at the St. Joseph Hospital Thursday. He had been a patient there for a week.
  McGavran was first married to Bertha Close, who died several years ago. His second wife, Mrs. Ida Mincks, survives, as do two sons, Keith of Ames and Kenneth of Des Moines, and several grandchildren.
  The body is at the Liggett Funeral Home in Seymour.

Final Rites For Mrs. Chas. McGavran
  Funeral services for Mrs. Chas. L. [Charles Lovell] McGavran were held at the Christian Church Friday afternoon at 2:30. The Rev. Clifford Carter, pastor of the United Brethern Church officiated.
  Music was furnished by Miss Isal Miller and Mrs. Verda Morrow, accompanied by Mrs. Gertie Smith. Selections were: "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "Under His Wing" and "Good Night and Good Morning."
  Those in charge of the flowers were: Flossie Davison, Maud Hickerson, Pearl Miller, Leta Allee, Ethel Bennett and Cleo Handlin.
  Pall bearers were: Jay Kincade, Warren Young, Vernon Cain, Bob Henderson, John Evans and Frank Miskimins.
  The Rebekah Lodge also conducted a short service.
  Interment was in Southlawn cemetery.
  Bertha Etta Close, daughter of P. [Pembroke] B. and Adaline Close, was born August the 28th, 1884 in [Johns Township] Appanoose county, Iowa, and departed this life April 24, 1946 in the hospital at Ottumwa, Iowa, where she had gone for treatment.
  At the time of her passing, she was 61 years, 7 months and 26 days onld.
  She was united in marriage to Charles L. [Lovell] McGavran, October 2, 1904. To this union, two children were born; Kenneth [Wayne] of near Sewal and Keith [C.] of Ames.
  She was preceded in death by her father and mother, one brother and one sister.
  Early in her married life, she united with the Christian Church in Seymour, and remained a faithful member until the end. She was president of the Missionary Society for the past five years, also a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Seymour.
  She was a faithful and loving wife and mother, a good neighbor and will be greatly missed in the home and community.
  She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, two sons, Kenneth and Keith; two daughters-in-law, and four grandchildren, four sisters, Mrs. Ira Garretson, of Seymour, Mrs. Della Liley and Mrs. Belle Vaughn of Corydon, and Mrs. Charles Holton of Russell, and one brother, Howard E. Close of San Diego, Calif., and a host of relatives and friends.
  She spent her entire life in Appanoose and Wayne counties; the last nine years of her life was spent in Seymour.


  She is not dead,  our precious one,
  She is only sweetly sleeping,
  She will live again, in the great beyond
  Where there shall be no weeping.
  So do not grieve for her dear ones,
  Although, your hearts are broken,
  For Jesus waits, on that Golden shore,
  To take her home to Heaven.


  Among the many relatives from out-of-town were Mr. and Mrs. Elvin McCavran and daughter Mary Jean of Powersville, Mo, Dorothy McGavran of Denver, Colo., Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Ball, Mr. and Mrs. Emory Lister, and Ell Hixenbaugh of Plano, Harold Lister of Mystic, Mrs. Olive Buck, Centerville, Mrs. Edith Stansbury of Oakdale, Mrs. Clyde Whitforth of Excelsior Springs, Mo., Mrs. Charles Wilson of Lansing, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Ray Edwards, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Taylor of Grinnell, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Potter and Mrs. J. R. Anderson and son Kenneth of Boone, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Lemley of Mystic, Paul Burr of East Moline, Mrs. L. E. Cotter and son Larry, Mrs. Edyth Burr of Sioux City.
  Mrs. Bell Vaughn and son Richard, Mrs. Della Liley, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Vaughn, Mrs. Glen McCough, all of Corydon, Mrs. Blanche Jones of Leon, Rev. and Mrs,. Charles Holton of Russell.
