Richard LeRoy Brown, 1929-2017

  Memorial services to celebrate the life of Richard L. “Dick” Brown, 88, a resident of Davenport will be 12:00 pm. Thursday, April 20, 2017 in the All Faith Chapel at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport. Inurnment will be in Davenport Memorial Park. The family will greet friends Thursday at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
  Mr. Brown died Monday, April 17, 2017 at his residence in Davenport. He was surrounded by his family and passed away following an extended illness.
  Richard LeRoy Brown was born February 6, 1929 in Dixon, Illinois, a son of William L. and Mary E. (Duncan) Brown. He graduated from Numa High School.
  He was united in marriage to Albena K. Pauletti on April 22, 1950 in Numa, Iowa. They have been blessed with nearly 67 years of marriage.
  He was a general supervisor at Alcoa Aluminum Company, retiring in 1985 after 32 years of service
  Dick enjoyed hunting and fishing, and had been a master gardener. He also enjoyed playing golf. Dick had the privilege of having many good friends; he especially cherished his friendship with Louie “brother” from down south and John and Max. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Alcoa Retirees Club, Plus 60 and the NRA.
  Memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church and Genesis Hospice.
  Those left to honor Dick’s memory include his wife, Albena, Davenport; children, Richard J. (Jo Ellen) Brown, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Ann (Michael) Salter, Bettendorf; a daughter-in-law, Beth Brown, Egan, Minn.; and nine grandchildren, Michael (Erica) Brown, Amy Brown, Joseph (Brooke) Brown, Christina (Matt) Dobratz, Sean Salter, Ali Salter, Tony Brown, Nick Brown, and Erin Brown; and a great grandson, Ethan Brown.
  He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Mark and a brother, William Brummett. May they rest in peace.

Levi Lafayette Butler, 1870-1956

  L[evi] L[afayette] Butler, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. T. Butler was born Oct. 29, 1870, in Appanoose county, near Seymour, where he made his home with his parents.  On Sept. 16, 1896, he was united in marriage to Cynthia Olive Fenley and to this union were born two sons.
  He purchased a farm east of Seymour where he was engaged in farming and stock raising until the year 1918, when he moved to Seymour where he made his home until the time of his passing.
  He was converted and united with the Baptist church of Seymour during the pastorate of Lenny Clemons.
  Mr. Butler was honest in his dealings with his fellow men; he had a cheerful disposition, he was loved and respected by all who knew him.  He was a good father, and a kind husband and was always willing to lend a hand to those who were in need.
  His companion passed away June 21, 1917.  He lived along until June 1, 1943, when he was united in marriage to Jennie Brown.  They made their home on East Wall street.
  He enjoyed good health and kept busily engaged until his recent illness. He suffered a stroke Aug. 15 and was taken to the Wayne county hospital.  He passed away Aug. 23 at the age of 85 years, nine months and 25 days.  All was done that medical science could do, but to no avail.
  He leaves to mourn his passing his companion; two sons, Glen Butler of Pontiac, Mich., and John Butler of Port Byron, Ill.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Asa of Seymour and Jesse of Des Moines, and two sisters, Emma Hiatt of Centerville and Verna Johnson of Silvis, Ill.  He also leaves several nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
  Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. W. M. Cleeton Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Liggett Funeral home.  Burial was in Southlawn cemetery.
  Pallbearers were nephews, Gerald Butler, Hiatt Butler, Roy Darrah, Ralph Butler, Merrill Hiatt and Claude Butler.
  Mrs. Vernon Cain played the piano for selected hymns.

Edith E. (Duncan) Fry, 1886-1973

  JEROME – Mrs. O. L. (Edith) Fry died at Cedar Rapids Friday night.   The funeral was Tuesday at the Johnson home in Centerville with interment in the Jerome Cemetery.  Mrs. Fry had been staying with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Shanahan, a few months during her declining health.  She was 87.
  Mrs. Fry was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver L. Fry; a daughter Delilah; three sisters and one brother.  Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Shanahan, seven grandchildren and one sister, Mary Ellen Brown of Centerville.

George Allan, 1882-1957

George Allan
  George Allan, son of Robert and Anna [McClure] Allan, was born in Irving [Irvine, North Ayrshire], Scotland, Dec. 6, 1881 [1882]. At the age of two years he came with his parents and sister Margaret to the United States.
  He was one of a large family, surviving him are three brothers and one sister. They are Thomas of Jerome, Mrs. William Hardy also of Jerome, Alfred of Guthrie Center, and William of Ottumwa.
  He was married to Mary [Frances] Gump in 1904 [December 27, 1903], she passed away in 1932. Six children were born of this union, two dying in infancy. Mourning his departure are Edmond of Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, Mrs. Ethel Villa of Lake Crystal, Minnesota, Ralph of Mankato, Minnesota and Mrs. Dorothy Randolph of Centerville. There are three grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
  In 1942 he was married to Lois Brown of Ottumwa, and they resided in Eddyville until her death in 1951. He then went to Lake Crystal, Minn., to make his home with his daughter.
  He came to Christ twenty-five years ago and was received into the assembly at Jerome and has been in full fellowship ever since. He daily read the Bible and continued to admonish his children to seek the Savior he knew so well.
  “The Lord giveth; and the Lord taketh away.  Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

Lottie Fern Brown, 1919-2011

  Lottie Fern Brown, 91 of Centerville, Iowa died on Thursday, June 23, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center Long Term Care in Centerville. She was born the daughter of William R. and Orpha (Howe) Ricketts on October 25, 1919 in Spickard, Missouri. She received her education in the Seymour High School at Seymour, 
Iowa and graduating in 1939.
  On February 20, 1940 Lottie was united in marriage to Willis Brown near Seymour, Iowa. She enjoyed helping her husband on the farm and being a home maker.
  She is preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Willis Brown; sisters, Nola Olson and LaVelle Elswick.
  Lottie is survived by: her sons, Bill and his wife, Pat Brown of Plano, Iowa and Larry and his wife, Sue Brown of Jerome, Iowa; sister, Francis McCarthy of Centerville, Iowa; brother, Allen Ricketts of Moline, Illinois; 8 grandchildren; 20 great grand children
  Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 27, 2011 at 10 am at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa with Rev. Kay Singley officiating. Burial will follow at the South Lawn cemetery in Seymour, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2011 from 2 pm until 8 pm with family present from 6 pm until 8 pm at the funeral home.

Ellen Abigale Stoner Van Dorn, 1866-1952

Mrs. Ellen Van Dorn Dies at 86 Years
  Mrs. Ellen A. Van Dorn, 86, passed away at the home of her son, Noah Van Dorn, Monday morning. She had been in ill health for some time.
  She was the mother of Earl Van Doren, Noah Van Dorn, Mrs. Roy Weist and Mrs. Glen L. Brown, all of Seymour community.
  Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Liggett funeral home at 2 p.m., with the Rev. W. M. Cleeton officiating.
  Burial was in the Jerome Cemetery.

Obituary: Mrs. Ellen Van Dorn
  Ellen Abbie Van Dorn, daughter of Noah and Catherine Stoner, was born near Jerome, Iowa, Feb. 5, 1866. She passed away April 13, 1952, at the home of her son, Noah, near Seymour. She grew up in Appanoose county and attended the Jerome school.
  December 21, 1893, she was united in marriage to George B. Van Dorn at the home of the Rev. J. M. Lougridge at Crossroads. They established their home in Lincoln township where she spent the remaining years of her life. To this union three sons and four daughters were born. She enjoyed reading her Bible and in early life attended the Jerome church and later attended the Baptist church in Seymour.
  In her declining years she enjoyed the radio services.
  She was the last decedent of the Noah Stoner family and was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Loren; two daughters, Opal Fox and Hallie -- who died in infancy; and one granddaughter, Wanda Ross.
  After the death of her husband she made her home with her children. She is survived by two sons, Noah and Earl; two daughters, Alpha Brown and Orpha Weist, all of Seymour; 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
  Funeral services were conducted at the Liggett funeral home Wednesday afternoon, April 16, by the Rev. W. M. Cleeton.
  Mrs. James Anderson, Jr., sang "Jesus Saviour Pilot Me" and "At the End of the Road," accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Harley Merritt.
  Pallbears were Dewey Mattley, Lester Harper, Everett Hornaday, J. W. Hockett, George Brundage and Earnest Keller. Flower bearers were Mrs. Dewey Mattley, Mrs. Lester Harperm, Mrs. J. W. Hockett, Mrs. Wyllard Sales and Mrs. A. E. Ellingworth.
  Burial was in the Jerome cemetery.

Glendoris Bailey Buck, 1879-1962

  Glendoris Irene Buck, 82, of Numa, Iowa, passed away Sunday, June 24, at the Golden Age Nursing Home, where she had been a patient for three weeks.
  Mrs. Buck was born in Princeton, Mo., the daughter of Jackson and [Delila] Ann McKern Bailey, and was married to Charley Ewurs who preceded her in death. Later she was married to Benjamin Otto Buck, who also preceded her in 1951. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Anna Mae; one son, Clarence; and one brother.  She is survived by a son, Paul Ewurs, Royal Lake, Ill.; a daughter, Mrs. Georgia Compton, of Franklin Grove, Ill.; three sisters, Mrs. Edith Fry, Mrs. Hazel Ponsetto, Mrs. Mary Brown, all of Jerome, Iowa; ten grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
  Mrs. Buck had spent the past two winters with a granddaughter, Mrs. Bernice Butler, of 1808 South 16th.
  Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 26, at 2 p.m., from the Numa Christian Church with the Rev. Orval Walker officiating. Burial will be in the Jerome Cemetery. The body is at the Miller-Wehrle Funeral Home.

Glendora Norris, 1856-1940

Glendora Norris County Pioneer Taken By Death
Had Lived on the Norris Farmstead
North of Numa For a Period of 75 Years
  Glendora Norris, 84, pioneer resident of Appanoose county in the vicinity of Numa, died at her home north of that city at 5:30 a.m. today, following ill health over the past several months. Miss Norris was born in Davis county, the daughter of Jacob and Mary Jane Norris, Feb. 14, 1856.
  She moved with her parents to Appanoose county at the age of nine and settled with them on the Norris homestead a short distance north of Numa where she has continued to live for a period of three quarters of a century.
Thirteen Children
  There were 13 children in the family and when the mother died while Glendora and her sister Phoebe were still in their teens, they took over the responsibilities of the household and cared for the other 11 children. In late years Glendora and Phoebe had continued at the farmstead and had been aided by a brother-in-law, J. E. Dursham [Dershem].
  Of the family, five children survive and are as follows: Lewis Norris of Centerville, Rt. 3, Guthrie Norris of Marshalltown, Charlie Norris of Cincinnati,m Mrs. Lana Brown of Ames and Phoebe at home.
Church Worker
  Miss Norris was an ardent worker in the Methodist church and went first with her family to Bellair church and later was a charter member of the first Numa Methodist church and also of the present place of worship that supplanted it. She was active in the Aid society and in Sunday school work and was perhaps one of the oldest members.
  Her death will be mourned by a host of friends and relatives. Funeral services are to be held at the Jerome Methodist church at 2:00 o'clock Friday. Effort is being made to secure the services of the former Rev. Shook of this city.
  Miss Norris's mother was buried at Jerome before there was a cemetery at Numa and the funeral is being held at Jerome where interment will be made beside the parent.

Phoebe Jane Norris, 1857-1940

Spent Three Quarters of Century On Farm Near Numa
Funeral Services Sunday
  Pheba Jane Norris, 83, resident of Appanoose county for three quarters of a century died at her home 2 miles north of Numa at 3:00 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
  Miss Norris had suffered a broken hip more than a year ago and had been bedfast since then. Her sister, Lana Brown of Ames, had been in attendance during the entire period of illness.
  Miss Norris came to Appanoose with her parents when she was eight years old. The family moved to the farm near Numa and it has been the old Norris home since then.
Loses Mother
  When Miss Norris was nineteen, her mother died, so the task of rearing the family of ten children fell to her and an older sister.
  Early in life she joined the Methodist church and was faithful in attendance as long as her health permitted. She was a steady church worker and held various church and Sunday school offices for many years.
  Her health had not been good for the past 25 years but she refused to give in to illness until the accident more than a year ago.
  In death she leaves three brothers, Charles of Harris, Mo., Lewis of Centerville, route 3, and Guthrie, of Marshalltown, and one sister, Mrs. Brown.
  Funeral services will be held at the Jerome M. E. church Sunday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock. Burial will be at Jerome.

Major William V. Brummett, 1921-2000

  William V. Brummett, 78, of Centerville died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville.
  He was born Dec. 7, 1921, in Jerome, the son of William and Mary (Duncan) Brown.
  Survivors include a brother, Richard Brown and his wife, Albena, of Davenport; special friend Thelma Cathcart; and a niece and nephews.
  He was preceded in death by his parents.
  He attended Jerome School for 10 years, then graduated from Numa High School.  He also attended Northwest Missouri State Teachers College and Centerville Junior College. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in March 1941, completed Armament and Gunnery school, then flew as an aerial gunner off the northwest coast after the attack on Pearl Harbor.; He was accepted as an aviation cadet and completed flight school, winning his wings in 1943.  Following transition in medium bombers he went to Europe when the air was was heavy. After the invasion he was in France until Germany's surrender. Upon return from Germany he was released from active duty to the Army Air Force Reserve and retired from the service in 1962.  He was awarded many medals and citations.
  Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Johnson-Lange Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Miller, C.PP.S., officiating. Burial will be in the Jerome Cemetery with military rites. A visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Obituary: Willis H. Brown

  Willis H. Brown, age 92, of Centerville, Iowa, died Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Centerville Mercy Medical Center. He was born the son of Glen and Maggie (Stroud) Brown on May 22, 1916 in Numa, Iowa. He attended rural schools through the eighth grade in southern Wayne County.
  On February 20, 1940, Willis was united in marriage to Lottie Fern Ricketts. Willis was a farmer and raised his family on the land he purchased in 1947 in Franklin Township of Appanoose County Iowa.
  Willis is preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; and a brother-in-law, Junior Rollins.
  He is survived by his wife; two sons, Bill Brown and his wife Pat of Plano, Iowa and Larry Brown and his wife Sue of Jerome, Iowa; two sisters, Marjorie Rollins of Unionville, Missouri and Betty Brown of Seymour, Iowa; eight grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.
  Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, June 1, 2008 at 2:00 PM at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa with Rev. Kay Singley officiating. Burial will follow at the Southlawn cemetery in Seymour, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2008 from 1:00 PM till 5:00 PM at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa. Family will be present Sunday, June 1, 2008 from 1:00 PM till 2:00 PM prior to the services.
  Memorials can be made to the Mercy Hospice. The Schmidt Family Funeral Home of Centerville, Iowa is caring for the Brown family at this time.

Jacob Norris & Mary Jane Abbott

Jacob Norris was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, 5 March 1830, the son of William Norris and Lana Stann, died 5 March 1907 in Numa, Appanoose County, Iowa, and was buried in the Jerome Cemetery. He married, probably in Appanoose County, Iowa, 4 January 1852, Mary Jane Abbott who was born [c1832] in Ohio, died 9 April 1881 in [place], Iowa, and was buried in the Jerome Cemetery, daughter of Hayes Abbott and Elizabeth Snow.

Jacob Norris was a member of the Numa Methodist Episcopal Church, serving as a class leader and trustee of the church; first a Whig, then a Republican; and a farmer. His farm was located east and south of Jerome in Section 12 and School District #1.

She married in Numa, Appanoose County, Iowa, 12 September 1872 [Book 5, Page 474], John Hayes Murphy, who was born 15 August 1850 in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa, and died 26 September 1933 in Blackfoot, Bingham County, Idaho, son of William Porterfield Murphy and Mary Amanda Nason. Children: Lillie Murphy, born c1873; Carrie Murphy, born c1875; Earnest Murphy, born c1877; Elbert Murphy, born c1879; Charles Murphy, born c1880; Winifred Murphy, born c1884; Nellie Murphy, born c1890; Bernice C.   2. William L. Norris, born [c1855] in Davis County, Iowa, and died [apparently before 1860].

Crist was born in [date] 1865 [place], died [date] 1947 [place] and was buried in the Jerome Cemetery, daughter of John G. Crist and Mary Ann Caufmann. Child: Cleo Olive Norris, born 29 July 1896 in Appanoose County, Iowa, died 11 February 1947 in Appanoose County, Iowa, and was buried in the Jerome Cemetery. She married 28 November 1917 Edward Potter Inman with whom she had seven sons.

  10. Charles G. Norris, born September 1869 in Appanoose County, Iowa, married 12 October 1893 Louie M. Elliot, and died [date] in [place]. Children: Hobart Norris, born October 1896, and Vurl Norris, born November 1897.
  11. Flora Lana Norris, born 24 August 1871 in Appanoose County, Iowa, married in Appanoose County, 17 February 1892 Ira T. Brown [12 May 1869-4 September 1932], died 5 May 1951 in Ames, Iowa, and was buried next to her husband in Southlawn, Seymour, Wayne County, Iowa. In 1898 they moved to Seymour, Wayne County, Iowa, where they went into business. She moved to Ames, Iowa, in 1939. Children: Ruth O. Brown who married Raymond Cain and Icil L. Brown who married Cecil Hook.
  12. Mary Magdaline Norris, born 8 June 1878 in Appanoose County, Iowa, married [place] 12 May 1903, James Edward Dershem, died 1 May 1933 in Centerville, Appanoose County, Iowa, and was buried in the Jerome Cemetery after a funeral service in the Jerome M. E. Church. [Obituary] James Edward Dershem was born 6 August 1876, son of Solomon Dershem and Eliza Yarger, died [place] [date] 1959, and was buried in the Jerome Cemetery.
