Elmer David Salasberry, 1926-1992

  Elmer David Salasberry, 66, a resident of Newton for 35 years died Friday evening, May 29, 1992, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines of cardiac arrest.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.
  The Rev. Roy Cupples of Grand Island, Nebraska conducted services. Burial was in Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton.
  Memorials to fund in his name will be accepted.
  Survivors are his wife, Iris; two sons, David of Des Moines and Randy of Newton; three daughters, Joyce Breckenridge of Monroe and Joleen Sutphin and Brenda Van Hoose, both of Newton; 10 grandchildren; and a great grandson.
  Also surviving are his mother, Nellie Salasberry of Centerville; three brothers, Albert of Tempe, Arizona, and Lawrence and Gene, both of Des Moines; and three sisters, Velma Gerling of Des Moines, Mary Thomas of Centerville and Pat Gibford of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his father, two brothers and a sister.
  Mr. Salasberry was a welder at Midwest Manufacturing Co. in Kellogg until his retirement.
  The son of William Henry and Nellie Phelps Salasberry, he was born January 22, 1926, in Mystic.
  He was married to Iris M. Seals December 23, 1950 in Urbandale, Missouri.

Lydia C. Huffman Phelps Bateman, 1844-1915

  Miss Lydia C. Huffman was born in Clay Col Ind., April 12, 1844, and came to Iowa at the age of 23. She was united in marriage to H. Phelps in the year of 1869. To this union were born five children, Cebina, Eliza, Viola, Lee and Stella. Mr. Phelps died in 1901.  Mrs.. Phelps was again united in marriage to Wm. Bateman on July 5, 1906.
  Mrs. Bateman died Nov. 27, 1915, at Jerome, Iowa, at the age of 71 years, 7 months and 15 days.  She united with the U.B. church in 1871. She leaves to mourn her loss two children, Lee Phelps and Stella Dooley of Jerome, and three step children, Wm. Phelps and Mrs.Mary Zimmerman of Lineville and Maranda Allard of Leon, and one sister, Linda Treasure of Lineville.
  The funeral services were held at the M. E. church Mondayafternoon by Rev. George L. Roper.

Jesse Lee Phelps, 1876-1956

  MYSTIC -- Lee Phelps, 80, resident of Mystic for many years, died at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, [1956], at the St. Joseph Hospital. He was a retired miner.
  Surviving are his widow, one son, Elmer Phelps of Mystic, four daughters, Mrs. Eddie Stout, Des Moines; Nelle Salisbury, Mystic; Ruth King, Corydon; and Gertrude Atwell, Plano; and several children and grandchildren.
  Short funeral services will be held at the Swanson Funeral Home here Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The body will then be taken to the Jerome Methodist Church, where services will be conducted by Rev. Sylvan Turner. Burial will be at Jerome.

  Jesse Lee Phelps was born 11 March 1876 in Decatur, Iowa, son of Horace Sumner Phelps and Lydia C. Huffman, and died 23 May 1956 at St. Joseph Hospital, Centerville, Iowa.  He married 1 September 1897 in Lineville, Iowa,  Eliza Meda Dooley who was born 22 April 1880 in Lancaster, Schuyler County, Missouri, daughter of Jonathan Charles Dooley [1835-1906] and Samantha Walker [1843-1914], died 6 May 1975 in Centerville, Appanoose County, Iowa, and was buried in the Jerome Cemetery.  Seven children were born to this union:  Ruth Phelps, Elmer Lafayette Phelps [1899-1978], Albert Oral Phelps [1901-1906], Mary Iona Phelps [1905-1979], Nellie Elma Phelps [1908-2001], Gertie Coy Phelps [1913-2002], and Robert Erwin Phelps [1916-1917].

Nellie Phelps Salasberry, 1908-2001

  Nellie Salasberry, 92, of Centerville died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.
  She was born June 19, 1908, in Jerome, the daughter of Jesse and Eliza (Dooley) Phelps.
  She married William Salasberry April 25, 1925, in Clarkdale. He preceded her in death in 1970.
  Survivors include her children, Mary Thomas of Centerville, Albert Salasberry and his wife, Doris, of Mesa, Ariz., Lawrence Salasberry and his wife, Linda, Gene Salasberry and his wife, Thanna, and Velma Johnson and her husband, Bud, all of Des Moines, and Patricia Gibford and her husband, Doug, of Newton; two sisters, Gertrude Atwell and her husband, Ivan, of Promise City and Ruth King and her husband, Ernie, of Des Moines; 23 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
  She was also preceded in death by four children, Elmer, Betty, Junior and Richard; her parents; three brothers, Elmer, Irvin and Albert Phelps; and a sister, Mary Stout.
  She was raised in Jerome, attending school in Jerome and Mystic.
  Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Solid Rock Church of God with Pastor Sammy Barges officiating. Friends may call all day Wednesday at the Thomas Lange Funeral Home with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m.  Burial will be in Jerome Cemetery.
  A memorial has been established to the Mercy Hospice Home in Johnston and contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Ace Kenneth Dooley, 1918-1982

  Ace Kenneth Dooley, 63, a resident of 16 1/2 South Sixth Street, Ft. Dodge and a onetime resident of this area will be held Monday, March 15 at 11 a.m. at the Jerome Cemetery with the Rev. James Schweizer officiating.
  The Miller-Wehrle Funeral Home, Centerville, is in charge of arrangements.
  He was born May 15, 1918 in Jerome and was the son of Clay and Stella Phelps Dooley. For the past 30 years he resided in Ft. Dodge where he was employed by Hormel Packing Co. His parents, two infant sisters, Beulah and Maxine Dooley; a sister, Coy Stout; five brothers, Reuben, Orville, Jess, Melvin and Charles Dooley preceded him in death.
  Survivors include a daughter, Pam Lybarger, Joplin, Mo.; a son, Lonne Dooley, Ft. Dodge; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Coza McKern and Bertha Blaine, both of Centerville.
  He had been in failing health the past 10 years. His death occurred early Friday, March 12, 1982 in Trinity Regional Hospital in Ft. Dodge.

Eliza Meda Dooley Phelps, 1880-1975

  Mrs. Eliza Meda Phelps, 95, a resident of Mystic passed away at the St. Joseph Hospital in Centerville Tuesday, May 6, 1975 at 4:15 a.m. She had been hospitalized 78 days.
  Born April 22, 1880 near Lancaster, Mo. she was the daughter of Charles and Samantha Dooley. On Sept. 1, 1897, she was united in marriage with Jessie Lee Phelps. He preceded her in death May 23, 1956.
  Her parents, two sons Albert and Ervin, two brothers Clay Dooley and Edward Dooley, one sister Grace Kelley also preceded her in death.
  Survivors include four daughters Mrs. Mary Stout of Des Moines; Mrs. Nellie Salasberry, Centerville; Mrs. Gertie Atwell, Promise City; Mrs. Ruth King, Corydon; one son, Elmer Phelps of Centerville, 30 grandchildren, 95 great grandchildren, 37 great-great-grandchildren.
  The body is at the Miller-Wehrle Funeral Home in Centerville. Funeral arrangements are pending.

  Funeral services for Mrs. Meda Phelps, 95, who passed away Tuesday, May 6 at St. Joseph Hospital, will be help Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Miller-Wehrle Funeral Home.  Rev. Eugene Maddox, pastor of the Church of God, will officiate.  Burial will be in the Jerome Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m.
