Maxine Printy Tharp, 1918-1999

  Maxine Tharp, age 81, of Unionville, MO died on Saturday, November 27, 1999 at the Mercy Medical Center in Centerville, IA. She was born the daughter of Melvin and Bertha Gail (Hixenbaugh) Printy on February 23, 1918 in Walnut City, IA. She graduated from the Plano Community Schools.
  Maxine was united in marriage on November 7, 1936 at Centerville, Iowa to Burdett Tharp. She was a homemaker. Maxine was a member of the Mt. Herman United Methodist Church near Unionville, MO, where she was a Sunday School Superintendent.
  Maxine was preceded in death by: an infant daughter; brotghers, Alvin T. Printy, Charles Printy and Mervin Printy; sister, Ruby Morris.
  Surviving family members are: husband, Burdett Tharp of Unionville, MO; son, Paul and his wife, Helen Tharp of Shawnee, KS; daughters, Gail and her husband, Ivan Wray of Numa, Iowa, Sharon and her husband, Jim Burns of Exline, Iowa and Margaret Stottlemyre of Unionville, MO; sisters, Margaret Hartman of Athens, GA; Bernice King of Chariton, Iowa and Anna Swan of Promise City, Iowa; brothers, Emmett Printy of Mesa, AZ; Lewis Printy of Melrose, Iowa and Robert Printy of Maple Plain, MN; 14 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 1, 1999 at 1:30 pm at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, IA, with the Rev. Harley Kennedy officiating. Burial will follow in the Jerome Cemetery in Jerome, IA.
  Visitation was held from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm Tuesday, November 30, 1999 at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, IA. The family received friends between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm.
  Memorial contributions may be given to First Responders Building Fund and left at or mailed to the Schmidt Family Funeral Homes, 501 North 18th Street, Centerville, IA 52544.

Burdett Otto Tharp, 1915-2002

  Burdett Otto Tharp, age 86, of Unionville, MO, died Thursday, April 11, 2002 at the Kirksville Manor Care Center in Kirksville, MO. 
  He was born on July 29, 1915 in Numa, Iowa, the son of Harry and Anna Mae (Ewurs) Tharp. He received his education in Numa Community Schools.
  Burdett was united in marriage to Maxine Printy on November 7, 1936 in Centerville, Iowa. He worked in the coal mines and was a farmer. He was baptized at the North Bend Christian Church and attended the Mt. Hermon Methodist Church.
  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Maxine Tharp on November 27, 1999, one daughter in infancy; one brother, Paul Tharp and one sister, Bessie Hixenbaugh.
  Survivors include son, Paul Tharp and his wife, Helen of Longmont, CO; daughters, Gail Wray and her husband, Ivan of Numa, IA, Sharon Burns and her husband, Jim of Exline, IA and Margaret Stottlemyre of Unionville, MO; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Berniece Butler of Centerville, IA.
  Funeral services were held on Monday, April 15, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, IA with Rev. Robert Peck of Grace Tabernacle Baptist Church officiating. Burial followed at the Jerome Cemetery in Jerome, Iowa.
  Visitation was held on Sunday, April 14, 2002 from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, IA with the family present from 6:00 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday evening.
  Memorial can be made to the Griffensville Historical Marker and left at or mailed to the Schmidt Family Funeral Home, 501 N. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa 52544.

Frank JoKing Massa, 1913-2000

  Frank JoKing Massa, 87, of Centerville died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
  He was born June 19, 1913, in Mathi, Italy, the son of Domenico and Anna (Giacamelli) Massa.
  He married Jessie Clark Jan. 26, 1936, in Numa. She preceded him in death June 12, 1979.
  Survivors include special friend Dorothe Blair of Centerville; three daughters, Margaret Hagan and her husband, Kenneth, of Keller, Texas, Irene Main and her husband, Billy, of Albia and Helen Tharp and her husband, Paul, of Shawnee, Kan.; a sister, Frances Jacobs of East Moline, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
  He was also preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Joe, Barney and Edward Massa.
  He received his education in Jerome schools. He worked for 42 years as a coal miner, the majority of the time at the New Gladstone Coal Company seven miles west of Centerville as one of the owner-operators until it closed in July 1971. He also worked at the Rathbun Fish Hatchery and city of Centerville, mowing the Centerville City Park. He was an active member of the 18-80 Club in Centerville.
  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville with the Rev. Richard Grimes officiating. Burial will follow in Jerome Cemetery in Jerome. Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
  Memorials may be given to the Jerome Cemetery, Jerome Methodist Church or the 18-80 Club and contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Elvin L. Van Blaricon, 1923-1995

  Elvin L. Van Blaricon, 72, of Jerome died Saturday, Dec. 2, 1995, at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital.
  He was born April 7, 1923, in Cincinnati, the son of George and Lena (Veach) Van Blaricon.
  He was married to Betty Tharp Nov. 9, 1947, in Centerville. She preceded him in death August 1977.
  Survivors include two sons, Rick and Brian, of Jerome; three daughters, Vicky Stephens and her husband, Michael, of Centerville, Shelia Kratofil and her husband, Sonny, of Mystic and Denise Van Blaricon of Jerome; four brothers, Jim, Dick and Larry of Davenport and Genie of Connecticut; four sisters, Stella Murphy of Phoenix, Ariz., Loretta Noel of Centerville and Clara Zemo and Judy Sharp of Bettendorf; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
  He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy Warren; and a brother, Bob.
  He was a coal miner. He served in the Army during World War II.
  Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, at the Lange Funeral Home with burial in the Jerome Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today, Monday.
  A memorial has been established to the Drake Public Library and may be left at the funeral home.

Harry Tharp, 1892-1981

  Harry Tharp, 88, a resident of Route 4, Unionville, Mo., died in St. Joseph Hospital, Centerville, Wednesday, April 15, 1981, following an illness of two years. He had been hospitalized since March 13. 
  Born September 11, 1892, in Avery, Iowa, he was the son of William and Rebecca Jane Stocker Tharp. He married Anna Mae Ewurs in Numa in 1913, and she preceded him in death in 1955.
  Mr. Tharp was a retired farmer and coal miner. He had farmed northwest of Mystic in the Griffinsville area, and in the Numa vicinity many years.  He had lived with his son in Missouri since 1967. He was a member of the Numa Christian Church.
  Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one son, William Hall Tharp; two brothers, Homer Tharp and Winifred Tharp; one grandson and one great-granddaughter.
  Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Orville (Bernice) Butler and Mrs. Gale (Bessie) Hixenbaught, Plano rural route; one son, Burdett Tharp, Route 4, Unionville; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Sherman Tharp, Bettendorf; and Glen Tharp, Davenport.
  Memorials have been established to both the American Cancer Society and the Diabetes Foundation. His son died of diabetes. Memorials may be given at the funeral home.
  Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Miller-Wehrle Funeral Home in Centerville, with burial in Jerome Cemetery. The Rev. Orville Shriver of LaPlata, Mo., will officiate. Visitation will be Friday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Anna Mae Ewurs Tharp, 1896-1955

Anna Mae Tharp Taken by Death
  Anna Mae Tharp, 58, of Numa, died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Gale Hixenbaugh north of Plano Friday. She had been there for the past six weeks. Mrs. Tharp had been in failing health for some time but her death came suddenly.
  She was born in Appanoose County September 15, 1896, the daughter of Charles and Irene Ewuers. She united in marriage with Harry Tharp of Mystic rural route. 
  Mrs. B. O. Buck, of Numa, survives.
  There are three daughters who survive. They are Mrs. Orville Butler of Centerville, Mrs. Gale Hixenbaugh of Plano, and Burdette Tharp of Mystic rural route. Nine grandchildren survive.
  The following brothers and sisters also survive and are Paul Ewers, of Round Oak, Illinois, Mrs. Forrest Compton, of Franklin Grove, Illinois and Mrs. Bea Buck of Boone, Iowa.
  The body is at the Miller-Wehrle Funeral home and tentative plans for the funeral have been made but are not definite. The plans now are for services at the Christian Church in Numa Sunday and burial in the Jerome cemetery.

Clarence Ewers Former Resident Here Car Victim
Son of Mrs. B. O. Buck, of Numa,
Dies in Dixon, Illinois, Hospital After Bridge Crash
  Word has been received here today of the tragic death of Clarence Robert Ewers, of Dixon, Illinois, former resident of Numa, who died at the Dixon hospital Monday as the result of auto accident injuries, which he received last Wednesday. Few details are known concerning the wreck here except that Ewer's car skidded and crashed into a bridge.
  In death Mr. Ewers leaves his wife, Dorothy, who was formerly Miss Dorthy Cline, of this city. He also leaves two children. Mr. Ewers was 38 years of age, and was the stepson of Mr. B. O. Buck and son of Mrs. Buck, of Numa.
  Besides his parents, wife and children, he leaves the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Anna Tharp, of Numa, Mrs. B. Hungate, of Centerville, Mrs. George Compton, of Dixon, Illinois, and brother, Paul, of Chicago.
  The body will arrive here at 6:00 o'clock Wednesday via the Rock Island and funeral services will be held at the Methodist church at Jerome Wednesday at 2:00 o'clock. Burial will be in the Jerome cemetery. They body will lie in state at the Johnson funeral home before removed to Numa for burial.

Clarence Robert Ewurs was born 27 December 1902 in Iowa, son of Charles H. Ewurs (10 July 1876-22 May 1909 - buried in Jerome Cemetery) and Glendoris Irene Bailey (27 Sept 1879-23 June 1962; buried in Jerome Cemetery; and married second Benjamin Otto Buck), died 10 February 1941 in an automobile accident in Dixon, Lee County, Illinois, and was buried in the Jerome Cemetery.  He married Dorothy Cline of Centerville, Iowa.

Obituary: Gail Mae Wray

  Gail Mae Wray, age 66, of Numa died Friday, June 4, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville
  She was born the daughter of Burdett O. and Violet
Maxine (Printy) Tharp on February 23, 1938 near Walnut City. She graduated from the Newton Community Schools in 1956.
  Gail Mae was united in marriage to Ivan Wray on February 25, 1956 in Knoxville. She worked in the Food Service Department at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital for over 24 years. She was a member of the Church of the Nazerene in Marshalltown. She and her husband made their home south of Numa for many years.
  She was preceded in death by: her parents and a sister in infancy.
  Gail Mae was survived by: her husband, Ivan Wray of Numa; daughters, Charlotte Wray of Centerville, Carla Cormeny and her husband, Larry of Moravia, Cheryl Wray of Kirkland, Wash., Carol Wray and husband,
  James Rollman of Madison, Neb., and Christine Repp of Centerville; son, Chad Wray and his wife, Roni of Belton, Mo.; sisters, Sharon Burns of Exline and Margaret Stottlemyre of Unionville, Mo.; brother, Paul Tharp of Longmont, Colo.; 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
  Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, at 10 a.m. at Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville with Robert Pick officiating.  Burial will follow at the Jerome Cemetery near Jerome. Public visitation was held on Monday at the funeral home.
