John Gilbert Starcevich, age 95 of Centerville, Iowa, died Friday, July 18, 2008 at the Mercy Medical Center in Centerville. He was born the son of Matt and Mary (Starcevich) Starcevich on August 24, 1912 in Jerome, Iowa. He graduated from Mystic Community Schools in 1932.
John served his country during World War II for the Coast Guard as a Chief Petty Officer. On December 20, 1941, John was united in marriage to Ruth Jordan in Centerville, Iowa. John worked in the coal mines in Appanoose County for nine years, before going to work for Coca-Cola for 16 years. Later, John worked for Gardaner Supply Company for five years, and True Value for over 15 before retiring.
John is preceded in death by: his parents, Matt and Mary Starcevich; his wife, Ruth Starcevich on July 16, 1995; two sisters, Ann Vinton and Mary Kruzich; and a brother, Matt Starcevich.
He is survived by: his son Michael P. Starcevich and his wife Lonnie of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; his two brothers, George Starcevich of Centerville, Iowa, and Milton "Mick" Starcevich of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 22, at 10 a.m. at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa with Fr. Dennis Schaab, C.PPS officiating. Burial will follow at Haines Cemetery in Centerville, Iowa.
Visitation will be held Monday, July 21, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
