Joe G. Buyan, 1914-1992

  Joe G. Buyan, 78, of Jerome died Monday afternoon, Nov. 23, 1992, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
  He was born in Jerome on March 11, 1914, to Rudolph Sr. and Katherine (Stemal) Buyan.
  He was a retired coal miner, a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville and an Army veteran of World War II. 
  Survivors include his sister, Olga Matkovich of Melcher, three nieces and two nephews.
  He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Slofco and Rudolph Jr.; and two sisters, Mary Polich and Dolly Buyan.
  Funeral mass will be held Wednesday morning at 11 at St. Mary's Church with Father Vince Hoying officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville. Rosary services will be held tonight from 7 until 8 at the Lange Funeral Home.
  A memorial has been established to St. Mary's Church and may be left at the Lange Funeral Home.

  1. I was the 1st pharmacist when Wal-Mart opened in Centerville. Joe spent many hours visiting with us when we first opened. Very neat man. I was proud to know him. The best story was the day he started working in the coal mine. He was 14 years old and he witnessed an older man being brought out of the mine with a broken back. The reason this story is so special to me was because that man with the broken back was my Great Grandpa-George Glascock.
