Ernest Lee Dooley, 1893-1974

  Ernest Lee Dooley of Jerome died Monday, July 8, 1974, in St. Joseph Hospital, at the age of 80.

  Born September 10, 1893, near Jerome, he was the son of Frank and Sarah CLose Dooley. He was married to Edith Viola Hughes in Ottumwa in 1913, and she preceded him in death October 7, 1969. He was also preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

  Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. John (Mildred) Cathcart, Jerome; two granddaughters; a brother, Grover Dooley of White Fish, Mont.; and two sisters, Mrs. Marie Olsen, Ottumwa; and Mrs. Mamie Lawton of Peoria, Ill.

  Mr. Dooley was a retired coal operator, heading the D. and C. Coal Co.

  Funeral services will be Wednesday, 1:30 p.m., at the Johnson Funeral Home, with John Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Jerome Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m.

Margaret "Maggie" Allan Hardy, 1884-1973

  Margaret (Maggie) Hardy of Jerome died Wednesday, July 25, 1973.  She was 89.

  Born in Scotland, April 17, 1884, Mrs. Hardy was the daughter of Robert Allan and Anna McClure. She was married to William Hardy in 1904, and they were the parents of four children.

  Surviving are three daughters, Myral Rash, Des Moines, and Mrs. Ruth Schock and Mrs. Edna Moore, both of Jerome; 11 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband and one son.

  Funeral services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Liggett-Randolph Funeral Home in Seymour, with John Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Jerome Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home Wednesday night at 7 p.m. for visitation. 

Fred Arthur Wailes, 1893-1971

Fred Wailes Rites Monday

  Fred Arthur Wailes of 1520 S. 15th Street passed away February 6, 1971 at the age of 77 years, 5 months and 8 days.

  He was born in Appanoose County, Iowa, August 28, 1893, the son of George and Frances Moore Wailes.

  He is survived by a brother, Marion Wailes of Centerville, Iowa and a sister, Mrs. Mina Lyon of Yakamo, Washington and several nieces and nephews.

  He was a retired farmer.

  Funeral services were held Monday at 1:30 p.m. from the Johnson Funeral Home with Rev. Cecil Latta officiating. Burial was in the Jerome Cemetery.

Dewey Dooley, 1898-1971

  Centerville -- Dewey Dooley, a resident of 608 East Van Buren, passed away Saturday at 4:20 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital at the age of 78 years, 6 months and 8 days. Born near Jerome on March 13, 1898, he was the son of Frank and Ollie Close Dooley. He was married to Garnet LaMasney in Ottumwa on Dec. 16, 1927. She survives his passing along with four children, James Dooley of Freeport, Ill., Mrs. Pamela Johnson, Santa Rosa, Calif., Thomas Dooley, Sunnyvale, Calif., and Michael Dooley, Centerville; 11 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers, Ernest Dooley, Route 3, Centerville, and Grover Dooley, White Fish, Mont.; two sisters, Mrs. Mamie Lawton, Peoria, Ill., and Mrs. Marie Olson, Ottumwa.

  He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Pearl, Earl and Roscoe Dooley.

  He was a veteran of World War I and a retired employee of the Woodward Govenor Co. in Rockford, Ill.

  Graveside services will be held Tuesday, leaving the Johnson Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. for the Jerome Cemetery. Rev. Donald Thrash will officiate.

  The family will be at the funeral home Monday evening from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Dominic R. Massa, 1889-1970

Dominic Massa Rites Tuesday

  CENTERVILLE -- Dominic R. Massa of R 3 Centerville, the Jerome community, passed away Saturday evening, February 7, 1970, at the Golden Age Manor at the age of 80 years, five months, 13 days.

  He was born in Metti, Italy, August 24, 1889 to Frank and Frances Gagliano Massa. His marriage to Anna Giacomelli took place in Italy on Sept. 1, 1912 and she survives.

  Other survivors include four children, Joseph Massa, Silvas, Ill., Frank Massa, Centerville, Barney Massa and Mrs. Frances Jacobs, both of East Moline, Ill.; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grand-children.

  His parents and a son, Edward, who lost his life in World War II, preceded him in death.

  Mr. Massa came to the United States and Appanoose County in 1913 and was a retired coal miner. 

  Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Johnson Funeral Home with Father Richard Steinemann officiating and burial will be in the Jerome Cemetery.  Rosary services will be held Monday at 8 p.m. from the Johnson Funeral Home.

Georgia Mira Sidles, 1894-1970

Miss Sidles, 75, is taken

  Miss Georgia Mira Sidles, 75, retired school teacher and resident of 306 W. Washington, Centerville, passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital Wednesday, April 22, 1970 at 12:45 p.m. following a brief illness. She had been hospitalized for one day.

  Born August 19, 1894 in Jerome, Iowa, she was the daughter of George and Ella Thomas Sidles. She attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls and was graduated from Morningside College, Sioux City, Ia.

  Miss Sidles was a member of the Jerome Methodist Church, the Women's Society, the Order of Eastern Stars at Seymour, and the Retired Teachers Association.  She had taught in Appanoose County before going to Sioux City where she was a teacher for 40 years.  The past four years she had made her home in Centerville.

  Her parents, an infant brother, Edmond, her twin brother, Joe, and a brother, George Sidles, all preceded her.

  Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Mary Mills of Des Moines and Mrs. Martha Orr of Austin, Minn.; a brother, Peter Sidles of Jerome, and a number of nieces and nephews.

  Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from Jerome Methodist Church with Rev. Kermit Gladfelder, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be in Jerome Cemetery.  The family will be at the Miller-Wehrle Funeral Home on Friday from 7 to 8 p.m.

George Earnest Rinker

RINKER, George Earnest.  Physician & Surgeon, born Numa, Iowa, May 31, 1877, son of Robert Franklin Rinker and Julia Ann Brinkley; educated Seymour HS 1896; 189-1903 attended Sioux City Coll of Medicine, MD 1903; Highland Park Coll., Des Moines 2 years; grad work in surgery, Omaha, Neb., and work in physio-therapeutics, Chicago.  Married Effie Bradley Sidles, 6, 1902, Jerome.  Son, J. Robert; daughter Margaret.  1896-99 rural school teacher, Wayne and Appanoose Co.; 1899-1900 dep co supt of schools, Woodbury Co., under J. D. Keller; 1900, practicing medicine, Oto; member Woodbury Co. Health Service; 1903, licensed to practice med in Nebraska; surg for IC RR; mbr outstaff of St Joseph's Hospital, Sioux City; 12 yrs member & Pres Oto Pub School Bd; past mbr Oto city council; owner 320 acre farm in Woodbury Co. and 6 residential properties in Oto; 1937, hon life member Sioux Valley Med Soc; Woodbury Co and Iowa St Med Socs; AMA; IOOF; AF&AM, Smithland; Methodist Church; Republican; hobby - farming; office & residence Oto.

Major William V. Brummett, 1921-2000

  William V. Brummett, 78, of Centerville died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville.
  He was born Dec. 7, 1921, in Jerome, the son of William and Mary (Duncan) Brown.

  Survivors include a brother, Richard Brown and his wife, Albena, of Davenport; special friend Thelma Cathcart; and a niece and nephews.

  He was preceded in death by his parents.

  He attended Jerome School for 10 years, then graduated from Numa High School.  He also attended Northwest Missouri State Teachers College and Centerville Junior College. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in March 1941, completed Armament and Gunnery school, then flew as an aerial gunner off the northwest coast after the attack on Pearl Harbor.; He was accepted as an aviation cadet and completed flight school, winning his wings in 1943.  Following transition in medium bombers he went to Europe when the air was was heavy. After the invasion he was in France until Germany's surrender. Upon return from Germany he was released from active duty to the Army Air Force Reserve and retired from the service in 1962.  He was awarded many medals and citations.

  Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Johnson-Lange Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Miller, C.PP.S., officiating. Burial will be in the Jerome Cemetery with military rites. A visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday. 

Purley Rinker

Rinker, Purley.  Attorney, born Appanoose Co., Iowa, Dec 15, 1884; son of Robert F. Rinker and Julia A. Brinkley; educated Seymour High School 1900; Iowa City Academy 1901; Univ of Iowa, 1908.  1908, practicing law, Centerville; S. Iowa Dist.
