William Phillips, 71, retired resident of
Cincinnati, Ia., shot himself with a .22 caliber rifle Friday night at 11:30
and died in the St. Joseph’s hospital in Centerville at 12:20 A.M., Saturday.
According to Dr. C.H. Mitchell, of
Cincinnati, who attended him, Phillips shot himself with the muzzle of the
rifle pressed against his head just above his right ear.
Further report is that Mrs. Phillips had
tried to prevent her husband from taking his life but was unsuccessful.
Mr. Phillips was well known and his tragic
death has come as a shock and sorror to a wide circle of friends and relatives.
Mr. Phillips leaves his widow, Etta Jane, and
five children, Oren of Exline, Delmar, of Superior, Wyo.; James of Bettendorf;
Woodrow, of Laramie, Wyo., and Mrs. Grace McQueen, of Rock Springs, Wyo.
There are 12 grandchildren and three great
grandchildren, as well as the following brothers and sisters: Charles Phillips
of Washington; Mrs. Pearl Andrews of Centerville; John Phillips of Des Moines;
Ernest Phillips of Centerville; Mrs. May Corder and Mrs. Eva Holmes of Ottumwa,
and Mrs. Kate Morrow of Centerville.
Funeral arrangements are pending and will be
announced later. The boy now lies in state at the Johnson Funeral home.
